Kathleen Dorsett and her parents Thomas and Lesley, have recently described in detail how they planned and carried out the death of Kathleen’s ex-husband Stephen Moore in the August 2010 and how they conspired to have Moore’s mother killed to stop her from testifying.
At the court hearing on Thursday, the former third grade teacher from New Jersey appeared with both her parents and recounted the events that led to Stephen Moore’s death, other plans that they have plotted to kill Moore including drugging him to death, as well as plans of having Moore’s mother killed by a hitman.
According to Kathleen’s testimonial, on the night Stephen was murdered, she asked him to come by the house and drop their then 20-month old daughter. She then sent her ex-husband downstairs where her father Thomas was waiting, to “get some tools”. Thomas said he started an argument with Moore, whom he admitted he has been having a hostile relationship with prior to and after the divorce with Kathleen, and then struck him with a very large cable. When Moore was making agonizing screams, Kathleen rushed downstairs to cover up Moore’s body sprawled on the driveway, when the next door neighbor began asking what the noise was about. Kathleen told the neighbor their dog was having seizures and it was what has been making the weird noises.
Kathleen, 38, and her father Thomas, 66, then dumped Moore’s lifeless body in the trunk of a car. The next day, Thomas took the car by the river and met a man whom he paid to burn the car for him. Kathleen now faces a 58-year jail term with no parole until after the 51st year for pleading guilty to first degree murder, second degree conspiracy to desecrate human remains, and attempted murder. Thomas is facing a 50-year jail term with parole eligibility to come only after 30 years in jail for murder and arson-for-hire.
Meanwhile, Kathleen Dorsett’s mother Lesley, 68, pleaded guilty to conspiring with her daughter to have Evlyn Moore murdered. She was arrested at a local department store after paying up a hitman, who turned out to be a police asset in disguise, to have the murder carried out. She is facing an 8-year sentence with parole eligibility only after seven years of jail term.
The hostilities between the Dorsett’s and Stephen Moore began a few years into the marriage of Kathleen and Stephen. Kathleen was said to have been complaining to his parents about Moore and how he can hardly provide for the family. The problem deepened when the divorce was filed and custody battle ended up in favor of Stephen. The Dorsett’s also allegedly were not very happy with the court’s decision to have them support Moore financially. This led to plots against Moore including finding someone to stash $300 worth of heroin on Moore, someone to smoke pot with Moore to have him busted by the police, and lastly, the murder plot.
Evlyn Moore was happy with how the case is turning out and feels that her son is getting the justice he deserved; meanwhile, Kathleen and Stephen’s daughter is now in Evlyn’s custody.
