The manhunt that had been on-going for more than a week in Southern California for an ex-cop cop killer came to a fiery end on late Tuesday.
Christopher Dorner was fired from the Los Angeles Police Department in 2009 for falsely accusing his training officer of kicking a subdued suspect. He challenged the dismissal in court and lost, which sent him on a rampage against the LAPD. His plan was complete with a manifesto describing his intent to seek revenge on officers and their families and that the killing would end when his name was cleared. The rampage began nearly two weeks ago when Dorner killed the daughter of the retired police officer that pursued Dorner’s cause in court, as well as her fiancée. He went on to kill a police officer and wound two others. Two innocent women were also wounded in the police pursuit of Dorner over the past nearly two weeks.
As of late last Thursday, the hunt had lead authorities to the San Bernardino Mountains – about 100 miles east of Los Angeles – where Dorner’s burned out truck had been found. Authorities focused their search there because there was no indication that Dorner had left the area. Throughout all of last weekend, authorities searched cabin after cabin.
On Tuesday afternoon of this week, authorities cornered Dorner in a cabin in the mountains. He remained in the cabin during a shootout with law enforcement that lead to the death of yet another officer and left another wounded. Police eventually shot tear gas canisters into the cabin, which ultimately caused it to catch fire. The charred remains of a man that authorities believed to be Dorner were found in the burned cabin late Tuesday. While the tear gas canisters contained pyrotechnic tear gas, which generates heat, police say they did not intend to intentionally burn down the cabin to get Dorner to come out.
Medical examiners have positively identified the body found in the burned out cabin as that of Christopher Dorner. Dorner’s remains were identified using dental records during an autopsy. Despite confirming the identification of the remains, cause of death has yet to be released.
The LAPD did announce that it will reopen the investigation into Dorner’s release. Though they made sure to explain that they are not doing so to appease a murderer, but to assure transparency and encourage trust amongst the community amidst allegations that invoke memories of the Rodney King incident, as well as a number of other similar incidents involving the Los Angeles Police Department.
